North Carolina
State University Equine Educational Unit
Farming
has been an integral part of North Carolina’s
heritage for centuries, and small farms have long
since played an important role in North Carolina’s
economy. North Carolina State University (NCSU)
continues to foster our heritage through its Equine
Educational Unit located on Reedy Creek Road across
from Schenck Forest; also up the road from Umstead
State Park in the Richland Natural Area (RNA).
The Reedy Creek Greenway runs adjacent to the
unit, providing a great opportunity for gazing
at these magnificent horses.
Sixty acres of pasture allow the spirit of farming
to remain very alive. Built in 1990, the Equine
Educational Unit has been equipped with facilities
to facilitate the learning of NCSU
students including reproduction laboratories,
foaling stalls, and breeding sheds. Currently,
the unit houses over forty horses, but plans to
expand to fifty to sixty horses once the facility
is completed and all pastures are established.
The goal is to create a hands-on working environment
where students can get the best possible experience
to carry out the North Carolina legacy once they
graduate.
Preserving the Equine Educational Unit as well
as the surrounding lands will ensure continued
equine education in the RNA and will remind us
of our heritage for years to come. |
