Big Lake
|
Located
in the northwest corner of Umstead State Park is Big
Lake, the largest of the three man-made lakes. Big Lake
is easily accessible from the parking lot located less
than a mile south of the Visitor Center. This quaint
and picturesque body of water provides a haven for those
interested in fishing and boating who are looking for
a private and peaceful aquatic experience. Bass, bluegill,
and crappie inhabit the lake, providing a challenge
for any fishing enthusiast. Canoe rentals are available
for the nature enthusiasts who enjoy paddling on the
open water with a warm sun and a balmy breeze while
exploring the lake’s 55 acres. Big Lake provides
a wonderful rest stop for bikers and hikers using the
gravel road that passes the lake at the southeast end.
Although parking is restricted to only a few cars
at this end, the small lot is usually not very busy.
This entrance to the lake
connects to Sal’s Branch Trail, which runs adjacent
to the lake on the east side, providing a variety of
opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty from many
perspectives. For aviation enthusiasts, Big Lake provides
an opportunity for a clear view of the flight path of
inbound and outbound planes of Raleigh-Durham International
Airport. Overall, this lake has something to offer for
everyone. Whether you enjoy boating, fishing, hiking,
or simply taking in the view, there will be an opportunity
for you to fulfill your interests at Big Lake. |
